Suu Kyi convicted - news reports

Published: 11/08/2009 at 01:07 PM

Aung San Suu Kyi has been convicted by a Burmese court, according to news agency reports

She was sentenced to three years in jail with hard labour, the reports said.

The sentence was mitigated and reduced to 18 months house arrest, the reports said.

The Burmese pro-democracy icon had denied the charge of breaching her house arrest conditions by harbouring an American who swam uninvited to her lakeside home, but said earlier she had expected the court to find her guilty.

Mrs Suu Kyi had argued it was not her responsibility to keep people out of her home. It was the responsibility of the Burmese authorities who kept her prisoner there.
